First Impression

The AUKEY PB-Y13 Sprint Lightning 10000 looks like any other slim 10,000mAh power bank. The type designed for use with a smartphone, fitting behind the phone in your hand. It is a bit larger than a 4.7-inch iPhone 8 and a bit smaller than a 5.7-inch Moto G6. And thicker than either. Inside that small, familiar form factor is a USB-C PD power bank. Capable of fast charging most brands of smartphones.

Device Testing

Check with your device’s manufacturer to verify which charging standards it supports.

USB Power Delivery & Quick Charge 4+ Phones

  • Apple iPhone 8/X/XR/XS
  • Essential Phone
  • Google Pixel
  • LG ThinQ/V30
  • Razer
  • Samsung Galaxy S8/S9/S10
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8/9
  • Xiaomi Mi 8/9
  • ZTE Axon Pro 9/10

Using an iPhone 8 for testing we find USB PD phones will fast charge over the USB-C port. iPhones will need to use a USB-C to Lightning cable, not included. And Android phones will need a USB-C to USB-C cable, also not included.

For iPhones, the USB-A port supports Apple 2.4A. An older, but still functional fast-charging standard. Older iPhones (4-7) can fast charge using USB-A. The Quick Charge post was a bit faster than the regular USB-A port. Newer iPhones will charge ~15 minutes faster using USB-C.

Quick Charge 3.0 Phones

  • HTC
  • LG
  • Motorola
  • Nokia
  • Samsung Galaxy
  • Sony
  • Xiaomi Mi 5/6
  • ZTE

Using a Moto G6 for testing we see Quick Charge will fast charge over the USB-A port. Any QC supporting Android phone with USB-C can use the included USB-C to USB-A cable.

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch charges at the expected rate with a 12V charger. It’ll draw up to 12W, shy of its 18W max draw. This is due to a shortcoming with the Switch itself. But it is more than enough to charge while you play.

Learn more about charging the Switch.

Pass-Through Charging

Pass-through charging allows a portable charger to both recharge and charges a connected device. Some of the energy flows from the wall output, through the portable charger, to the device. The remaining energy recharges the portable charger itself.

The AUKEY PB-Y13 supports pass-through charging a couple of ways:

  • Input: USB-C, Output: USB-A
  • Input: micro-USB, Output: USB-C or USB-A

With micro-USB as the input USB-C output drops to 5V. So you won’t be fast charging anything. To get back to 9V or 12V you’ll need to both disconnects the micro-USB cable and USB-C cable.

To show the drop in charge speed I charged a Nintendo Switch up by 10%:

  • Normal charging while sleeping: 14 minutes
  • Pass-through charging while sleeping: 24 minutes
  • Pass-through charging while playing: 70 minutes

Pass-through charging is useful for overnight stays with limited wall chargers. It is not recommended to do so regularly. It puts more heat and stress on the portable charger, which can affect its lifespan. Doing it when traveling is fine. But don’t set this up next to your bed at home every night.

Summary

The AUKEY PB-Y13 Sprint Lightning 10000 is one of the thinnest USB-C PD power banks on the market. Its form factor is nice for holding it and a phone together. While it isn’t a high output power bank you shouldn’t dismiss its performance to size ratio. It is about the same size and only a bit heavier than your phone. It’ll slip into any commute or travel bag. Or a jacket pocket.

AUKEY PB-Y13 Sprint Lightning 10000 ports

AUKEY PB-Y13 Sprint Lightning 10000 ports

For the Nintendo Switch, it charges in handheld mode while you play. Due to the 12V power profile, it is slower than some other USB-C PD chargers. But still enough to charge the battery with the most demanding games.

Its 18W USB-C PD will fast charge Power Delivery supporting phones and small tablets. It will also charge the Nintendo Switch while you play in handheld mode. Though not as fast as possible (12W vs 18W). The 2018 iPad Pro will charge as well as with its own charger, but it can charge faster.

Its Quick Charge 3.0 port will fast charge most Android phones. Including Samsung, Motorola, and other QC supporting models. The included USB-C to USB-A cable works great for QC phones with USB-C.

It won’t fast charge if more than one port is in use. If both USB-C and USB-A are connected they each drop to 5V output. The Moto G6 went from over 16W to 10W. And the Nintendo Switch went from 12W to 7.5W. Those are decent charge rates and I would be fine charging two devices at once while asleep. But if you need to charge as fast as possible keep it to one device at a time.

About AUKEY

AUKEY has U.S. based support (web and email) and a 24-month warranty. You must have purchased the product either from them or through Amazon for support.

Bottom Line

The AUKEY PB-Y13 Sprint Lightning 10000 will fast charge most model USB-C phones. As well as the Nintendo Switch and many tablets. Its support of USB Power Delivery and Quick Charge makes it great for a mixed brand household on the go. Though you can only use one port at a time if you want fast charging.

Buy if you:
  • Need support for both USB PD and Quick Charge
  • Are looking for fast charging support for a Huawei phone
  • Want to spend less than with a newer model 18W/10,000mAh power bank
Don’t buy if you:
  • Need to charge a laptop
  • Want fast charging output + regular output together

You’ll want a USB-C wall charger to quickly recharge this USB-C power bank. I recommend the AUKEY PA-Y18 18W PD. It’ll recharge this power bank at its max rate. And pairs well as a small, travel-friendly charger.
