Choosing the Right Portable Charger For You

Unlike wall chargers a portable charger allows you to recharge your phone anywhere. As they have their own rechargeable batteries you aren’t tethered to a wall outlet. With the right power bank can charge your phone as fast as any wall charger. And have enough power to get you through a busy day or weekend camping trip.

The lithium batteries used in a portable charger do add weight, bulk, and cost compared to a wall charger. And of course a portable charger can only offer a finite number of recharges before it runs out of power itself.

With all that in mind, the three things to look at when buying a portable charger are capacity, output, and price.

Capacity – Only Carry What You Need

All things being equal more capacity means more uptime for your phone. But you can end up with too much capacity. More capacity also means a higher price tag and more weight. You don’t want to pay for and carry around a power bank that recharges your phone 4 times. When you really only need 1-2 recharges. The best power bank for your Huawei phone is one that meets your uptime needs. But not much more.

Milliampere hours (mAh) is a measure of a battery’s capacity.

  • 5,000mAh | 0.8 recharge | 3-5 oz
  • 10,000mAh | 1.5 recharge | 7-8 oz
  • 20,000mAh | 3 recharges | 13-16 oz
  • 26,800mAh | 4-5 recharges | 16-21 oz

I recommend a 10,000mAh power bank in most cases. Most Huawei phones have similar sized batteries. With the P30 being the smallest and the Mate X being the largest. If supporting two Huawei phones I’d move up to 20,000mAh. The smaller power banks will be lighter and cheaper. And tend to be designed with smartphones in mind.

A 26,800mAh power bank allows you to recharge your phone through the work week. Before having to recharge the power bank itself. Some prefer that convenience to carrying less weight. Larger power banks are also a good idea when camping or otherwise away from civilization.

Output – Enabling Fast Charging

With the right output in a power bank you can fast charge your phone. But it won’t be as fast as your phone’s included wall charger. Huawei uses proprietary fast charging tech. Newer phones support SuperCharge. It offers some of the fastest recharge times available. But to do so safely it requires a special charger. They moved the power conversion circuits from the phone into the charger. So the phone can’t deal with non-Huawei fast charging tech.

With there is a second option for fast charging Huawei phones: Huawei FCP. FCP pre-dates SuperCharge. It was the fast charging tech developed for the first Huawei phones with USB-C. It works with their latest phones, but at a slower rate than SuperCharge.

USB-C Cable

Not all USB-C cables can support Huawei SuperCharge. But they can all support Huawei FCP.

With Huawei’s SuperCharge power bank you’ll want to stick with the USB-C cable included with your phone. It can handle the extra output. Most other USB-C cables will limit the output, disabling SuperCharge.

For other power banks, including those with Huawei FCP, you can use the USB-C to USB-A cable they include. But you can’t use the power bank’s cable with your SuperCharge charger. Your original Huawei cable can work with the power banks.
