Fast Charging the iPhone 11

The new iPhone 11 is here. And we finally have details on its hardware and specs. Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro are keeping the Lightning port we’re all use to. And both support the same USB Power Delivery fast charging standard found in the iPhone 8/X/XR/XS.

The iPhone 11 includes the same Apple 5W USB power adapter as previous model iPhones. If you want to fast charge (0-50% in 30 minutes) you’ll need to get a better charger. As well as a USB-C to Lightning cable. If looking for a second charger you’ll be better served getting a fast charger. It’ll help future proof for your eventual next iPhone upgrade.

The iPhone 11 Pro includes a proper fast charger. A first for the iPhone line. As well as a USB-C to Lightning cable. If you only need one wall charger you’re all set. But for those that need to charge their iPhone at work or on the road you’ll want a second charger. There are lots of options that will work as well as Apple’s charger. But will cost you less, and are better for charging on the go.

Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro can use the same type of fast charger and cable.

USB-C Charging vs Wireless Charging

As with previous models, the iPhone 11 supports both fast charging via USB-C. And wireless charging via Qi. Like many things tech there is a trade off between wireless and wired. Wireless is more convenient. While wired has better performance.

USB-C charging is faster. Especially if your battery is below 50%. It will fast charge your iPhone twice as fast as the best wireless charger. It’ll go from 0% to ~50% in 30 minutes with USB-C. But a 7.5W wireless charger will only get up to ~27% in the same time. Even after an hour of charging wireless doesn’t catch up.

Qi wireless charging is more convenient. You place the iPhone on the charging pad. No fiddling with a cable and using two hands to get it connected. And no cable yank when you pick up the phone later.

There is no hard evidence that one is more damaging to the iPhone’s battery than the other. Both options generate heat. USB-C can get hotter, but for a shorter duration. While wireless generates heat for a longer period of time. When comparing two specific chargers the hotter one is less desirable. But it is difficult to compare all USB-C chargers to all wireless chargers for all conditions.

About iPhone 11’s Fast Charging

The iPhone 11 uses USB Power Delivery as its fast charging tech. That is what allows it to charge from 0-50% in 30 minutes. USB PD is an open standard, maintained by the USB Implementors Forum. Whom Apple is a member.

The iPhone 11 will draw up to 15W (9V/1.66A). That is the same as the iPhone 8/X/XR/XS. To do so it requires a USB-C PD compatible charger. Usually one offering 18W or more. And a Lightning to USB-C cable.

In most circumstances the iPhone will draw less than 15W. If you measure the rate with a power meter (or check out my reviews) it is often closer to 10W. As the iPhone’s battery increases its charge it reduces the power draw. Fast charging shuts down ~80%.
