First Impression

The Novoo PowerCube Mini 5000 is a legit pocket sized USB-C PD power bank. Its form factor is like “lipstick” sized power banks, but square instead of round. It is larger and heavier than other mini power banks. But those don’t support USB-C Power Delivery and are usually less than 5,000mAh. The Novoo approach is a good compromise between old, small design and new tech.

The Nintendo Switch charges at the expected ~12W. The Switch under draws power at 12V, maxing out at 12W. At 9V or 15V it can get up to 18W. Chargers which offer 12V but not 15V will under perform with the Switch. The issue is with the Switch, not the charger. Please note 12W is still more than enough to charge the Switch in handheld mode while you play.

The PD protocol negotiation with the Switch is normal. A 5V connection at the start, then resetting to 12V after negotiation. Current ramps up once 12V is established.

The power bank’s USB-C port fast charges the iPhone 8 using a USB-C to Lightning cable. Android phones that support Quick Charge or similar fast charging standards will do better with the USB-A port. The Moto G6 does regular charging via USB-C above. If you use the USB-A port, which offers Quick Charge, you can get it up to 16W. This goes for all Quick Charge compatible phones.

Limited Capacity

In my capacity testing the PowerCube Mini 5000 recharged my sleeping Switch up to 62%. That is less than 2 hours of playtime with Zelda or Mario. I see this power bank working well for commuters or as a backup.

If Switch battery life comes up shy during your commute or daily routine this power bank can get you over the hump. You’ll hardly notice it in your bag and you can recharge it with any USB-A power source (or most USB-C chargers) at home or work.

It is also good for most phones. Apple and Google phones can fast charge from the USB-C port. Samsung, Motorola, and Quick Charge phones can fast charge from the USB-A port. It can be your phone’s primary power bank while serving as a backup for the Switch.

Summary

The Novoo PowerCube Mini 5000 is great for those wanting as small of a USB-C PD power bank as possible. But its size keeps it from being a great power bank for the Switch in general. If all you need is an extra hour or two of playtime it is perfect. It’ll also work well as a backup charger, and you can get your money’s worth by using it to fast charge most model phones.

*I did find a discrepancy between the published specs and my testing. The USB-C output is listed as 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A. My USB Power Delivery PD sniffer reported 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A. During testing I didn’t see more than 2A @ 5V, backing the PD sniffer’s report. I reached out to Omars. The project manager said 5V output is limited to 2A with USB Power Delivery devices (such as my sniffer). But with regular USB-C devices it can reach 5V/3A. Almost no USB PD devices only charge at 5V, so I wouldn’t expect anyone to see a performance issue.

The PowerCube Mini 5000 can charge a Switch and phone (USB-A) at the same time. But doing so reduces the charge speed to the Switch. With only the Switch it chargers at 12V. When the USB-A port connects the USB-C output drops to 5V. The Switch ends up going from 12W to 9.4W. That’s still enough to keep up with gaming demands. And of course with limited capacity the power bank won’t last long charging two devices at once.

Bottom Line

The Novoo PowerCube Mini 5000 is a truly pocket sized option for fast charging your Switch. So long as you are aware of its limited capacity. If you like the design but want more playtime check out the Novoo PowerCube Mini 10000.
