Ports
What type of USB ports and how many depends on what you’re wanting to charge. Some may say more ports the better. But you can end up with more than you’ll actually use. More ports also mean a higher price tag and more weight. Chargers with too many ports aren’t as travel friendly. You don’t want to pay for and carry around a multi-port charger when a cheaper, more compact model would work as well. Then again you don’t want to juggle charging both you and your SO’s phone while on vacation. That where this Anker charger buying guide comes in. To help you get what you need. And only what you need.
How Many Ports?
The simple answer is how many devices do you need to charge together? For most people, the answer is 1 or 2. Here’s a few things to consider:
- Will this charger be in the living room? Or your home office?
- How many devices do you travel with?
- Can some devices be charged during the day, while others charge at night?
- Do you travel with someone else? What devices do they bring and need daily?
USB-A
Older and cheaper devices still use USB-A as their preferred charging port. If your device has a micro-USB port that connects to a USB-A port to charge. It can work with a USB-C port. But that requires a special cable and isn’t worth the added expense and hassle.
Anker still offers USB-A chargers. But most of their newer chargers have been focusing on USB-C.

Desktop Chargers
A desktop charger is a larger type of USB charger. Wall chargers have built-in prongs and plug right into a wall outlet. Desktop chargers have a separate power cord and often sit on a desk. Desktop chargers can offer more USB ports, great for charging several devices at once. But they aren’t travel friendly. They are larger, heavier, and you have to keep up with the power cord.
Anker offers a few desktop chargers. All aimed at charging a bunch of devices at once.

Output
Along with ports, Anker charges vary by their power output. That determines how well a particular charger will work with your phone, laptop, or another device. Anker offers several different charging technologies in their various models. But this Anker charger buying guide will get you to the right tech.
PowerIQ
- Anker’s own tech
- Uses USB-A port
- Similar to Apple 2.4A
- Charges any smartphone
- Fast charges iPhones, though newer iPhones charge faster with USB Power Delivery
Quick Charge 3.0
- Fast charging standard found on many Android phones
- Uses USB-A port on Anker chargers
- Charges any smartphone
- Fast charges Samsung, LG, Motorola, and other Quick Charge supporting Android phones
PowerIQ 2.0

- Newer iPhones charge faster with USB Power Delivery
USB Power Delivery (USB-C PD)
- Newer fast charging standard developed alongside USB-C
- Uses USB-C port
- Charges any smartphone
- Fast charges iPhone 8/X/XR/XS, Samsung Galaxy S8 and onward, Google Pixel, and other USB PD supporting Android phones
- Also used by Nintendo Switch, iPad Pro, and laptops with USB-C
- Anker’s USB-C PD charges only go up to 60W output
PowerIQ 3.0
- Anker’s own tech
- Uses USB-C port
- Similar to Quick Charge 4+, in that it supports both USB Power Delivery and Quick Charge 3.0
- Unlike Quick Charge 4+ it is against USB-C specs, but no known issues
- Fast charges most smartphones (Motorola, Huawei, and OnePlus being the big exceptions)
- Can I also charge Nintendo Switch, iPad Pro, and laptops with USB-C
- Anker’s USB-C PD charges only go up to 60W output
What Is Fast Charging? How Different Standard Works
You can charge any phone, tablet, or the Switch with any of Anker’s chargers, regardless of the tech they use. But to fast charge, you need a charger that is compatible with the tech in your device.

My Picks:
Single USB-C, 18W USB PD, and PowerIQ 3.0. Almost the same size as the charger included with most iPhones. But offering three times the output in a similar package. Fast charging any newer iPhone. Its PowerIQ 3.0 technology doesn't do anything for iPhones. But allows it to fast charge many Android phones. In case you have a mixed household.
- Fast charges iPhone 8/X/XR/XS/11
- Future iPhones with USB-C ports will continue to support USB PD
- PowerIQ 3.0 = Quick Charge 3.0 compatibility for popular Android phones
- Prongs don't fold
- Dimensions: 1.8 x 1.1 x 1.1 in | 1.1 oz

iPhone 4/5/6/7

- Travel friendly
- Dimensions: 2.4 × 2.5 × 1.1 in | 4.7 oz

- Fast charges two iPhones
- Travel friendly
- Dimensions: 1.5 x 1.3 x 1.2 in | 1.3 oz
Samsung Galaxy
My Picks:
Single USB-C, 18W USB PD, and PowerIQ 3.0. Its USB PD tech will fast charge the latest Samsung Galaxy models. With future Galaxies expected to continue to support USB PD. And its PowerIQ 3.0 tech (Quick Charge 3.0 compatible) will fast charge older model Galaxies. If your Samsung has USB-C this will fast charge it.
- Fast charges Samsung Galaxy
- PowerIQ 3.0 = Quick Charge 3.0 compatibility for popular Android phones
- Prongs don't fold
- Dimensions: 1.8 x 1.1 x 1.1 in | 1.1 oz

- Travel friendly
- Dimensions: 2.2 x 2.1 x 1.1 in | 2.5 oz
Requires a USB-C to USB-A cable, not included.
Google Pixel
My Picks:
Single USB-C, 18W USB PD, and PowerIQ 3.0. Its USB PD tech will fast charge the Google Pixel. As the Pixel line has always support USB PD the PowerIQ 3.0 tech doesn't offer anything. Buy it for its smaller size and weight.

LG V30 and ThinQ series support Quick Charge 4+. Older LG phones support Quick Charge 3.0.
My Pick:
Single USB-C, 18W USB PD, and PowerIQ 3.0. Its USB PD tech will fast charge LG V30 and ThinQ series models. And its PowerIQ 3.0 tech (Quick Charge 3.0 compatible) will fast charge older LG phones with USB-C.

- Prongs don't fold
- Dimensions: 1.8 x 1.1 x 1.1 in | 1.1 oz
Review of the Anker PowerPort III Nano
Requires a USB-C to USB-C cable, not included.
Budget:

Review of the Anker PowerPort II PD
Huawei & OnePlus
Huawei and OnePlus phones use proprietary fast charging technology. Which is not compatible with any of the standards Anker includes on their chargers. So you will only be able to charge these phones up to 10W. Compared to their included chargers, which range from 20 to 40W.
Single Port:
Single USB-C, 15W USB-C. Small and cheap. And no performance loss for Huawei and OnePlus phones, as they'll only charge at their normal rate with any Anker charger.
- Charges Huawei or OnePlus phones at their normal rate
- Doesn't support any fast charging tech
- Travel friendly
- Dimensions: 2 x 1.7 x 1.1 in | 2.1 oz

Most Android phones not already listed support Quick Charge 3.0/4+. As such any of these Anker chargers will work well.
If you have an Essential Phone or Razer phone then see the Google Pixel’s recommendations instead.
My Pick:

Nintendo Switch
My Picks, Handheld:

My Picks, Lightning:
Single USB-C, 18W USB PD, and PowerIQ 3.0. Almost the same size as the charger included with most iPhones. But can fast-charge an iPad Pro. Its PowerIQ 3.0 technology doesn't do anything for iPads. Buy this charger based on its size and weight.
- Fast charges iPad Pro (Lightning) to max rate
- Charges iPad Pro (USB-C) to normal rate

Review of Anker PowerPort PD 1
Both chargers require a USB-C to Lightning cable, not included.
