Amazon has removed RAVPower and Aukey chargers. As a result, I have updated my own listings and go over what happened to those brands.

The post The Removal of RAVPower and Aukey from Amazon appeared first on Switch Chargers.

In the spring of 2021, a database breach led to a large number of direct messages between Amazon vendors and customers. These exchanges were for free products in exchange for positive reviews. Over 13 million such records were found, involving more than 200,000 people. Putting the validity of Amazon reviews in grave danger. One of the end results was the removal of RAVPower and Aukey products from Amazon.

How Amazon Reviews for Free Products Worked

The Amazon vendors would send reviewers a list of items for which they wanted a 5-star review. The reviewers would buy the product themselves, receive it from Amazon, and then leave a 5-star review. Once done the reviewer sent the vendor details of the review and their PayPal account. The vendor would refund the cost of the item through PayPal. On Amazon, the review is from a “verified buyer” with no return on record, so it appears legit to both customers and Amazon.

Prominent reviews on Amazon were often contacted with such offers, so the reviewers again would seem legit given their large review history on the platform.

Amazon’s Reaction and the Removal of RAVPower and Aukey

After the scope of this practice was revealed Amazon took action against many vendors who participated in this practice. Among those were RAVPower and Aukey, the #2 and #3 producers respectively of USB-C chargers and power banks.

In early May 2021, Aukey was kicked off of Amazon. A month later the same happened to RAVPower, as well as a number of smaller brands during that period. Their Amazon storefront pages were removed and direct links to their products loaded “meet the dogs of Amazon” pages for removed products.

While the boot from Amazon appears justified under the terms of agreement and the need to maintain review integrity, it is worth noting that Amazon Basic branded USB-C chargers and power banks have been made available. And their position on the top-selling lists has benefited from the removal of two large rivals.

Changes to SwitchChargers.com Listing RAVPower and Aukey

As a result of these changes, I have updated and rebuilt my own USB-C wall chargers and power banks lists, which previously contained many RAVPower and Aukey products. There were too many broken links to make those lists useful to my readers.

It also gave me an opportunity to go through the up-and-coming brands, the new offerings from Amazon Basics, and improve the organization of the lists for you.

You will still see a handful of RAVPower and Aukey items on my list, though not nearly as had been there before. Both brands have made a limited return to Amazon. RAVPower is using their in-house iSmart brand. While Aukey is being less subtle with AukeyPower.

Reviews On SwitchChargers.com Work Differently

I don’t participate in reviews on Amazon directly, all of my reviews are posted to this site. Some reviews are for products I bought without the maker’s involvement, while others are for products provided for free from the maker. The freely provided products (standard practice among most reviewers) are shipped by the maker, sometimes through their Amazon store, but never associated with my personal Amazon account. Each and every review notes who provided the product at the start of the review.

I make no promises on the content or positivity of a review when a product is provided. The maker does get an early preview of the final draft and is welcome to provide technical corrections as needed. But all content is provided by me with no direct editorial input by others. It best benefits me, this site, the products I review, and you the reader for me to provide as honest and helpful a review as possible.

Nintendo Switch Consoles

Can’t start shopping for the Nintendo Switch gift guide if you don’t have the actual console.

The Nintendo Switch has been the best selling console for the last few years. Once COVID-19 hit sales jumped up and have stayed high. Meaning the Switch isn’t as available as it was last holiday season. The full-size Switch is harder to find (or priced above MSRP) while the Switch Lite is more available. But keep in mind the Switch Lite has a smaller screen and cannot connect to a TV.

Nintendo Switch

This is the original version of the console. It offers handheld, tabletop, and TV play modes. Boasts a larger screen and larger battery. But also uses more power and weighs more.

Original Nintendo Switch, new Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch Lite

Pros:

Both handheld and TV modes available

Larger screen

Longer battery life (updated version vs Lite)

Removable Joy-Cons

Cons:

Heavier

More expensive

In 2019 Nintendo did minor hardware updates to the Nintendo Switch. Today any console you buy new should be the updated model with better battery life. If the box is red you’re getting the newer revision.

Nintendo Switch Models

Nintendo Switch Lite

A handheld only version of the Switch. Works with the same games (motion control only games require separate Joy-Cons). Offers the same performance and video quality on its built-in screen, sharing much of the same hardware as the full-size model. And can work with many of the same controllers and accessories. But it cannot be connected to your TV.

Pros:

Smaller and lighter

Cheaper

Longer battery life than original Switch

Available in different colors

Cons:

Smaller screen

No TV mode

Controllers are built-in

The Nintendo Switch Lite is better for anyone wanting a smaller/lighter model for handheld gaming only. Cost savings are going with the Lite, but be sure the lack of TV support (which makes multiplayer games work for a household) is not something you want.

Games – Nintendo Switch Gift Guide for 2020 Best Sellers

The selection of games is a big part of what makes the Nintendo Switch so popular. No Nintendo Switch gift guide would be complete without going over the popular games of the season.

Popular Games

These are among the most popular Nintendo Switch games this holiday season. If you aren’t sure what to get it is hard to go wrong with Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, Pokémon, Super Mario, and Smash Bros.

Physical vs Digital Games

From a Nintendo Switch gift guide standpoint physical games are easier to give. You buy it, wrap it, and any model Switch can play it. Digital games have to be purchased by the Switch’s owner, otherwise you run into sharing restrictions Nintendo has in place.

Pokémon Sword for Nintendo Switch

Physical Games

Sold in any store that also sells the Switch.

Discounts from retailers.

Buy pre-owned copies for less.

Loan to friends and family. Or resell.

Easier to use between multiple Switches in the same home.

You control the copy.

Have to swap cartridges when changing games.

If lost it is gone.

Digital Games

Can launch immediately from the Switch.

Can loan to friends and family, but you can’t both play at the same time.

The purchasing Switch profile has to be set up on other Switches in the same home to play. And cannot be played if the original “master” Switch is in use with any digital game.

Even if you lose your Switch you can re-download the game.

Nintendo eShop doesn’t have discounts as often or deep as retailers.

Can’t resell or even give away.

Nintendo can take it away from you under extreme circumstances.

Need a larger microSD card to hold your game collection.

Most Switch owners use a mix of physical and digital games. All games are available as digital. But not all are available as physical.

For a single Switch household: Physical saves you money (if willing to wait for a deal) and you can resell games when you’re done. But you have to travel with and swap out cartridges. Digital is quick and easy, and you won’t ever lose the actual game. You’ll more often than not have to pay full MSRP, but if you usually buy on launch day then the cost is the same.

For a multi-Switch household: Physical is much easier to share, along with the other benefits listed above. Digital can be shared, but it takes a bit of setup. More importantly, the owning account’s master Switch has to be inactive or playing a physical game for another Switch to run a shared digital game. If the master Switch is playing digital Mario the other Switch cannot play digital Zelda.

If buying for someone else find out if they have a preference. For physical games, you can get them the one they want easily enough. If they prefer digital then buy them a Nintendo eShop gift card. They have to buy the game with their own Nintendo account, making a gift card is the best option.

Controllers

Controller preference is a personal thing for a gamer. Some prefer one style while others prefer another. It can depend on what we’re used to and what game we’re playing. This Nintendo Switch gift guide lists the more popular options out there. But if buying a controller for someone else it is best to get something they’ve told you they want.

Pro Controller

Considered the best for the Nintendo Switch, the Pro Controller is wireless with 40 hours of battery life. The heftier controller is great for shooting games, like Fortnite and Splatoon 2.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

For new Switch owners, I recommend trying the Joy-Cons out before you buy a Pro Controller. They have worked out well for most players with most games.

Joy-Con Grips

No products found.

No products found.

Extra Joy-Cons

The Nintendo Switch includes two Joy-Cons. Turn them 90 degrees and you have two individual controllers. If you want to do 4 player games, such as Mario Kart and Super Mario Party, then an extra set of Joy-Cons may be a better option than buying 2-3 full-size controllers. This Nintendo Switch gift guide recommends starting with Joy-Cons before moving on to larger, single person controllers.

Joy-Cons come in many colors. They all work the same, the difference is only in their appearance. You can get a set that matches what you have. Or get something new and change things up. Any pair of Joy-Cons can connect to any Switch.

There are a lot of accessories made for the Nintendo Switch and worth of being on the gift guide. Many are useful, but these are considered essential by the Switch community.

Screen Protector

A screen protector is a cheap way to protect the most vulnerable part of the Switch. You can still use the touch screen. When ready to install run a hot shower in the bathroom and do the install there. The steam will reduce the dust in the air, making it easier to keep the space between the screen and protector clean.

Carrying Case

If your Switch ever leaves home you’ll want a carrying case. The most recommended models hold game cartridges and have an accessory pocket at the top, with the Switch with Joy-Cons in the bottom.

Be sure to get a case for your model Switch. A regular Switch case won’t carry a Switch Lite well.

microSD Card

The Switch and Switch Lite have 32GB of internal storage. That has to hold any digital games you buy, DLC, game updates, your game saves, and screenshots. That’s not enough for a lot of players. A microSD card allows you to move the larger digital game data to bigger storage. Game load times will increase by 2-3 seconds vs internal storage.

SanDisk’s Ultra series is usually the best value.

The Switch limits how fast it can read a microSD card. So getting a faster, more expensive card doesn’t provide any benefit.

When selecting a card compare the cost per GB. Take the price and divide it by how many GB you get. This will tell you which are a better value.

You can upgrade to a larger card later. But you’ll need to re-download your digital games and updates.

Additional Accessories – Nintendo Switch Gift Guide for 2020 Suggestions

As with any popular electronic device, there is no shortage of available accessories for the Nintendo Switch. As a general rule, this Nintendo Switch gift guide recommends focusing on accessories that solve a problem you have. But feel free to check out these extra options you may want or hadn’t thought about.

Stands

A downside to the Switch’s design is you can’t plug it into power while in tabletop mode. Using its built-in kickstand blocks the USB-C port at the bottom. And the Switch Lite doesn’t even come with a kickstand. Either way, plugging into the USB-C port is a problem when playing in tabletop mode. But this Nintendo Switch gift guide is a list of solutions below.

Power Banks

What kind of Nintendo Switch gift guide would this be if it digs into this website’s main purpose – USB-C charging!

To charge your Switch while on a plane or otherwise away from a power outlet you’ll need a portable charger (aka power bank). The right one can keep up with your gameplay. And it doesn’t take a big, expensive model to double your playtime.

Travel Chargers

What kind of Nintendo Switch gift guide would this be if it digs into this website’s main purpose – USB-C charging!

The Switch includes a Nintendo Switch AC Adapter. It works great behind your TV, but isn’t a travel friend and doesn’t work well with a lot of other USB-C devices. Depending on your play and travel habits you may want another charger when away from home. And one that is more flexible with your other devices.

Requires a USB-C to USB-C cable, sold separately.

Car Chargers

If you only need a car charger on occasion. And your road trips are 8 hours or less. Then consider getting a power bank instead. Those work in the car, plus on planes, camping, everywhere. But if you need to charge a Switch in the car often you can get a car charger, which you don’t have to worry about recharging.

Audio Accessories

Your audio accessory needs depend on whether you want to use voice chat in multiplayer games or not. This Nintendo Switch gift guide recommends sticking mostly with what you already use and are comfortable with. But for in-game voice chat, you’ll need something a bit more special. And if what you like is Bluetooth then you’ll need an adapter for the Switch. If you use wired headphones then just plug them in and you’re good.

Voice Chat & Game Audio

Most voice chat is run through the Nintendo Switch Online app. Which runs on your phone, not the Switch. So you need to Bluetooth connect to your phone and wired connection to your Switch with the same headset to get audio from both.

No products found.

Use Your Bluetooth Headphones

With a Bluetooth adapter connected to the Switch, you can use whatever Bluetooth headphones or earbuds you already own. Most players won’t notice any audio delay.

Anker's upcoming PowerLine USB-C to DC cable. With USB-C on one end and DC adapter for the other. Bringing the benefits of USB-C charging to older HP and Lenovo laptops.

The new Anker PowerLine USB-C to DC cables help bring older laptops into the current charging age. They have USB-C on one end. And on the other is a DC coaxial connector. Allowing many PC laptops lacking USB-C to enjoy the benefits of one charger for all your devices.

For Older Windows Laptops With DC Power

These cables are for older laptops which don’t use USB-C for power. But instead have the older DC coaxial connectors. Also known as barrel connectors. Lenovo, HP, and ThinkPad laptops used these types of connections until slowly changing to USB-C. And they are the two laptop brands Anker has mentioned in relation to their new cable. Hopefully Anker will offer a list of compatible laptops upon release.

The AC to DC power adapters used by such laptops are large and heavy compared to similar outputting USB-C chargers.

They are also more expensive. Because often you could only get a compatible power adapter from your laptop’s maker. Or a limited number of third party options. But USB-C is an open standard. With many different brands offering viable chargers for this kind of USB-C to DC cable. Of course Anker is hoping you’ll choose one of their chargers, too.

Anker USB-C to DC Specifications

Anker has stated the cables will support up to 65W USB Power Delivery. Supporting 65W on a USB-C to USB-C cable requires an eMarker. That may be present here. But this cable isn’t following USB-C specifications. And will need to work with the power negotiation systems of the laptops and their DC connector.

They are 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. That’s shorter than the laptop’s original power adapters. As they usually use two cables, giving it more total length. But 6 feet with a smaller charger will be easier to pack in your commute or travel bag.

Device Compatibility

The cables will support four different DC power port sizes:

1.7 – 4.0 mm

3-4.5 mm

5-7.4 mm

5.5-8.0 mm

An Anker charger is not required, but is recommended. Any 60-65W USB-C PD charger should do. The advantage of sticking with Anker is for customer support. They’ll be able to help with any issues as you’re using their products down the line.

tl;dr – Anker PowerLine USB-C to DC Cable

Anker PowerLine USB-C to DC cables will connect up to a 65W USB-C PD charger to a Lenovo, HP, ThinkPad, and other laptops. Which use a DC coaxial (aka barrel) power connection.

Two of the four cables are now available. An Anker 65W USB-C PD charger is also expected in the future.

A USB-C PD charger and cable is smaller and lighter than DC power adapters. Likely will be cheaper, but depends on Anker’s price.

USB-C to DC adapters aren’t easy and many cheap ones don’t work all the time. Anker is known for quality, so expect this will be a tried and tested solution. But also won’t be the cheapest adapter available.

The AUKEY PA-B2 Omnia 61W is aimed at MacBook Pro 13-inch owners. As well as other 13 to 14-inch laptops with 60-65W power adapters. It is 65% smaller than Apple’s included power adapter.
What Is It Good For?

Its standard USB-C PD power profiles work with iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, iPad Pro, and Nintendo Switch. But its main use is for 12 to 14-inch laptops which include a 45-65W USB-C power adapter. The reduced size and cost make it a great second charger option. Leave your laptop’s larger, included charger at home or work. Use AUKEY’s for a second charge location. Or as a dedicated travel charger for all your small to mid-sized USB-C devices.

AUKEY PA-B5 Omnia 100W – Replace your MacBook Pro 15 or 16-inch’s power adapter for less cost and space

Update: Check out my full review of the AUKEY PA-B5 Omnia 100W.

The AUKEY PA-B5 Omnia 100W is aimed at larger MacBook Pros. As well as other 15-inch or larger laptops with 87-100W power adapters. It is half the size of Apple’s 96W USB-C power adapter (which has replaced the 15-inch’s 87W power adapter). AUKEY’s MSRP of $54.99 is 30% less than Apple’s $79 price. And you get a few extra watts, too. Neither charger includes a USB-C to USB-C cable.

AUKEY PB-Y36 Sprint Go Mini 10000 PD – A compact, dual charging power bank

This is a product analysis, not a review. The information presented here was based on specs and details offered by AUKEY.

I have since done a full review of this product.

AUKEY is offering pre-orders on a new power bank. Model PB-Y36, named the Sprint Go Mini 10000 PD. An update to their previous PB-Y13 18W/10,000mAh power bank. This model being more compact in size, while offering the same fast charging options.

Tech Specs

Ports: USB-C, USB-A

Capacity: 10,000mAh / 37Wh

USB-C Output: 18W USB-C PD (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A)

USB-A Output: 18W Quick Charge 3.0

18W total output

USB-C Input: 18W USB-C PD (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A)

Size: 4.1 x 2 x 1 inches | 105 x 50 x 25 mm

Weight: 6.9 oz | 195 grams

Features

Trickle charge mode, for earbuds, fitness trackers, and wearables

Includes USB-C to USB-C cable

Trickle charge mode forces a power bank to stay on for a period of time, usually two hours. Power banks switch off when power draw is low or zero, to save power. That’s ideal in most cases. But things like Bluetooth earbuds, watches, and fitness trackers draw low current. So a power bank can turn off, even while they are trying to recharge. With trickle charge the power bank stays on, so those devices can charge completely.

The included USB-C cable makes it a good value buy. Cheaper options are missing the cable, costing an extra $8-10.

Price

$24.99 MSRP

$19.99 pre-order special available through March 20, 2020

What Is It Good For?

As with most 10,000mAh power banks this is a good, lower cost option for keeping handheld devices topped off. Whether it is recharging your phone during your commute. Or adding a few hours of play time to a Nintendo Switch for a domestic flight.

The support of both USB PD and Quick Charge allows it to fast charge a large number of devices.

USB Power Delivery devices include:

Apple iPhone 8/X/XR/XS/11

Apple iPad Pro

Google Pixel

LG ThinQ

Nintendo Switch

Samsung Galaxy S8/S9/S10

Samsung Galaxy Note 8/9/10

Xiaomi Mi 8/9

Quick Charge 3.0 compatible devices include:

LG

Motorola

Nokia

Samsung Galaxy

Sony

Xiaomi Mi 5/6

The AUKEY PB-Y36 Sprint Go Mini 10000 PD meets or exceeds the output performance of its peers.

Its specs show a similar size to Anker’s most compact USB-C PD power bank. Neither are the thinner design. Which rests more comfortably in your hand if holding the power bank and phone together. The AUKEY also doesn’t weigh any more. So you wouldn’t notice it any more than another power bank in your bag.

AUKEY has launched a new USB-C power product line called Omni-Power. It is a range of charging related products. Showcased together around a variety of new technologies.

Omni-Power consolidates all the latest charging technologies into one comprehensive charging solution. -AUKEY

AUKEY Omni-Power Technologies

Dynamic Detect – Intelligent distribution of available power, impacting multi-port charging.

GaN – Gallium nitride, which replaces traditional silicon. Allows for higher power throughout in a smaller space without an increase in heat. Thanks to big increases in energy efficiency.

USB Power Delivery – Fast charging standard created by the same folks who brought us USB-C. And supported by Apple, Google, Nintendo, and many others.

Graphene Skin – 100x times stronger than steel in the same thickness. Used in AUKEY’s new cables they offers the durability of braided nylon. While being flexible like thinner cables.

The individual AUKEY Omni-Power products use a mix of the above technologies. But they all focus on providing fast charging for USB Power Delivery supporting devices.

While the specs show 100W USB-C PD power pass through support, you won’t get 100% of that into your device. The hub itself requires a few watts. And some power is always lost during a transfer. Using the wireless charger will also take up to 10W away from your connected device.

Most USB-C laptops don’t have strict power requirements. And under normal usage won’t miss a few watts. But if you need to charge ASAP remove any wireless charging device. And connect directly to your power adapter if every minute counts.

AUKEY Graphite Charging Hub – An all-in-one office charging solution

This is a product analysis, not a review. I do not have this product in hand (yet) to do a full review. The information presented here is based on specs and details offered by AUKEY.

AUKEY has released a true all-in-one charging solution for your desktop. Either at work or a home office space. It includes a charging base and removable power bank. The charging base works with small to mid size laptops, phones, and other USB accessories. The power bank can wired or wirelessly charge your phone when away from your desk.

What Is It Good For?

This is aimed at anyone who sits at a desk with their laptop and phone. But who also spends enough time away from their desk they need to keep their phone charged out of their bag. And it provides the convenience of one and done shopping. Rather than piecing together your own setup.

The 45W USB-C PD on the charging base works well with:

All 12-inch USB-C laptops, including the MacBook

Many 13 to 14-inch USB-C laptops, including the MacBook Pro

iPad/iPad Pro

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Nintendo Switch

Fast charges phones supporting USB-C PD, including iPhone 8/X/XR/XS/11, Samsung Galaxy S8 and newer, and Google Pixel

The USB-A ports on the charging base don’t provide fast charging. But will still keep most model phones topped off. As well as small USB accessories, including headphones/earbuds. There are indications the charging pins for the power bank share the same circuit as the USB-A ports. So the USB-A ports may charge slower when the power bank is charging. Or used as a wireless charging pad. I’ll do more testing when I receive a unit to review.

How It Compares To Other Solutions

You can always put together your own charging solution with several different products. Though they may not provide every feature the Graphite Charging Hub does.

I put together a collection of other AUKEY products. Which offer much the same functions as the charging hub.

45W USB-C Wall Charger

AUKEY PA-Y13 46W PD Charging Station ($57) – Provides 45W USB-C PD on your desktop. Along with two USB-A ports. As well as Quick Charge, which the charging hub does not offer.

18W USB-C & Quick Charge Power Bank

AUKEY PB-Y13 10000 USB-C PD ($30) – A 10,000mAh power bank. With the same 18W USB-C PD and Quick Charge 3.0 as the charging hub’s included power bank. The PB-Y13 is a bit smaller, but actually heavier. And it does not offer Qi wireless charging.

AUKEY USB-C to USB-C 2.0 ($8) – Needed to charge the power bank with the charging station. Will allow for an 18W charge, while the charging hub provides 15W.

5W Qi Wireless Charging Pad

AUKEY LC-C5 Graphite Wireless Charger ($16) – A 5W Qi wireless charging pad. Needed to add the wireless charging function provided with the charging hub.

AUKEY PA-U32 Mini Dual Port Wall Charger ($10) – You’ll need a 10W USB-A wall charger to plug the wireless charging pad into. Otherwise it’ll have to take up one of the USB-A ports on the charging station. The PA-U32 is the cheapest option available from AUKEY.

Total Cost

The total cost for these alternative products is $121 MSRP. Compared to $150 MSRP for the charging hub. But you have to buy five separate items. Take up two wall outlets instead of one. And you’ll have no wireless charging when away from your desk. But you do gain Quick Charge at your desk.

Even with the cost difference I’d learn toward the AUKEY Graphite Charging Hub. It would be a tidier setup. With fewer cables and everything in one spot. And I don’t have any QC compatible devices I use regularly.

Availability

The AUKEY Graphite Charging Hub is currently available on Amazon.

This Nintendo Switch bricking FAQ is to help you separate facts from fears. When it comes to concerns with third party accessories damaging the Switch console.

Why create this FAQ?

In the spring of 2018, a wave of user reports involving third party docks damaging the Nintendo Switch swept through the community. We only had end-user reports to go on. The media only covered content from a single gaming influencer. And Nintendo was mostly quiet during the event. Add to this the Nintendo Switch was the first USB-C device for many. And USB-C is significantly more complicated than the legacy USB. As it offers a lot more technology.

As a result a lot of fear monger also occurred. Some found technical information they didn’t quite understand. But latched onto a single sentence and stirred up the community more. To get a good idea of what was actually happening you had to piece it together from several sources. While one person posting “it’ll brick your Nintendo Switch” was far faster and affected many.

I created this FAQ to better share what we know from legitimate sources. To tell what we know to be true, what is theorized, and what is false. To answer your questions and concerns with the best data possible.

What is “bricking”?

The term means a device won’t function and isn’t recoverable. “It is as useful as a brick.”

For the Nintendo Switch, this often appears as stuck in the boot screen or not booting at all.

What was the Nintendo Switch bricking scare event?

The bricking of Nintendo Switches by third-party docks went back to October 2017. But the community-wide event occurred in mid-March 2018. Shortly after Nintendo released firmware update 5.0.0 for the Switch. It went viral when YouTuber Spawn Wave released a video on the death of his Switch. He postulated it was an issue between his Nyko dock and the 5.0.0 update. And told his viewers to avoid third party docks under the new firmware.

From there other Switch owners started reporting their own Switches bricked. The consensus was the 5.0.0 update did something bad with the Switch and third-party docks. Over the next two months, some new info came out. Though nothing official from Nintendo that was helpful. Since then there have been good theories put forward on the actual cause of the issues. But to date, no definitive evidence has been presented.

Nintendo Switch Bricking Timeline

October 2017: Nyko releases a smaller Nintendo Switch dock.

The gaming media covers it in a positive light. It offered a smaller and lighter travel option than the official dock. In fact, they won’t write about the bricking until March 2018.

There were immediate reports of Switch consoles being damaged by the dock. But no media coverage or viral spread of the information.

March 12, 2018: Nintendo released the 5.0.0 update.

March 15, 2018: Spawn Wave (the same guy who did the 5.0.0 security video above) releases a YouTube video on the death of his Switch.

Original video.

He recently updated to 5.0.0 and left his Switch on a Nyko dock using Nintendo’s AC adapter overnight. It was dead the next day.

He checked internals, no obvious sign of a problem. Used a new Switch to charge the old Switch’s battery. Old Switch is stuck in a boot loop. No way to access the saved game data.

Nyko offered to replace Switch. Declined offer as Switch gets beat up from his video work.

His Takeaway 1: Don’t use any third-party dock under 5.0.0. A replacement dock case (Nintendo’s electronics) is fine.

His Takeaway 2: Lack of ability to backup saved data is a huge flaw on Nintendo’s part.

March 15-16, 2018: Nintendo blogs and news sites start reporting third party docks can brick your Nintendo Switch.

March 27 2018:, Nyko responded to an article on Kotaku:

Reached by e-mail, a Nyko representative told Kotaku that the company is “aware of the issue some Portable Docking Kit owners are facing after updating the firmware on their Nintendo Switch to version 5.0. Though further testing is still required to determine the exact root cause of the problem, we believe it is related to the way the Switch handles AV output for an external TV/monitor while the console is docked on the Portable Docking Kit.” Nyko says it is working on a solution and has policies on replacing malfunctioning products.

Later that same day, Nintendo made a statement to Kotaku:

Unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo’s testing and evaluation process. They might not work at all with our game systems, and they could have compatibility problems with certain games, the Nintendo Switch system itself, and other licensed accessories and peripherals.

April 26, 2018: Insignia states they’ve had no customer reports of issues since the 5.0.0 update.

Insignia is an in house brand for Best Buy.

A service representative claimed they had no customer reports of issues after the 5.0.0 update.

May 1, 2018: A class-action lawsuit is filed against Nyko.

It is aimed at Nyko’s handling of the bug. How they did not address it or disclose it to customers.

There has been no media coverage of the lawsuit’s status since it was filed.

What do we think actually caused the bricking?

To date, no one has presented hard evidence of the original cause of the issue. Or why certain third-party docks caused damage. While others did not. But there are some good theories out there.

The leading theory is that some third party docks didn’t have proper Power Delivery protocol hardware. A PD protocol chip is used to negotiate power between two USB-C PD devices. In this case, the dock acts as a charger for the Switch. Lack of proper negotiation could allow improver voltages into the Switch’s circuits.

Two separate reviews have found the Nyko docks did not use a PD protocol chip. Instead, they emulated the function with other hardware.

Skull & Co: What causes bricking?

An engineer’s POV on third party dock bricking

It is likely FastSnail and other known bad brands did something similar.

This would also explain why other brands, most notable Insignia, have no reports of issues. If they used proper PD protocol chips the issue would never come up.

Was the 5.0.0 firmware update a factor?

Probably not. There is no denying an increase in the number of reports since the 5.0.0 update. But that was also after a video on the issue went viral. Remember Nyko docks were damaging Switch consoles 4-5 months before the firmware update.

That said the update made a lot of changes around accessing the Switch. All undocumented. And Nintendo continues to release updates with little to no documentation.

Do all third party docks brick the Nintendo Switch?

At this point, the answer is no.

A lot of Switch owners will tell others to avoid all third-party docks. But some have shown to be safe by lack of issues, such as Insignia. And newer docks have since been released with no known issues.

We know Nyko, FastSnail, and Charjenpro should be avoided.

If you want to play it safe but still want a smaller dock there is a DYI option. Buy a Switch dock replacement case. I use one from Basstop. It is only a plastic shell that can house the electronics inside the official Switch dock. Complete with tools and how-to video, you can use official Nintendo electronics in a much smaller setup.

Do third party chargers also cause bricking?

No. And anyone who tells you otherwise will not be able to provide any proof when asked. Try it.

There are no confirmed reports of third party chargers causing a problem with the Switch.

Third-party accessories are not inherently unsafe. Damage caused by a third party accessory is not covered under the Switch’s warranty. Nor should we expect Nintendo to test against third party accessories. Third-party accessories are common across all electronics. Most of the time they enhance and fill niches users want. There is the occasional bad apple, as we’re seeing now.

Most USB-C chargers and power banks are not created for the Switch only, like a dock. Anker has two Nintendo Switch Edition power banks. But both use technology common in their other USB-C PD power banks. And most are made by companies with years of experience. They understand PD protocols and have been enacting them for a while.

See my Safely Charging the Switch page for more details.

Does bricking affect my saved game data?

At the height of the issue, people affected lost all their game data. It pre-dated Nintendo Switch Online and the cloud backup. You could transfer your profile from one Switch to another. But not when the original Switch wouldn’t boot.

Repairs from Nintendo involved replacing the motherboard or replacing the entire unit. The Switch’s storage chip is keyed to its own motherboard. Nintendo seems unwilling or unable to transfer data when changing hardware.

Today it is better, but not worry free. Nintendo Switch Online is available with cloud backup. But that needs to be active before the damage occurs. It also doesn’t backup every game for anti-cheating reasons. Most notable Splatoon 2 and Pokémon: Let’s Go.

Some local repair shops can also swap out the affected components. Rather than change out half the system.

How can I backup my gave save data?

You can subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online program ($20/year). That includes cloud saves for most games. Some games, most notable Splatoon 2 and Pokémon: Let’s Go, will not back up to the cloud.

You can also transfer it to another Switch, but both devices need to be in working order. Note your profile is moved, not copied.

What should I do if my Nyko dock bricked my Nintendo Switch?

Nyko had been offering to repair/replace affected consoles and attempt to save data. You should contact them via customersupport@nyko.com. But don’t hold your breath on getting your saved game data back.

You can also contact Nintendo. Reports were mixed on free warranty repair or paid (~$115). Keep in mind your Switch’s warranty was only for 12 months. Except were local laws say otherwise.

Why is the dock so complicated?

In short, because it needs to be. When designing the Nintendo Switch they embraced new technology. Which allowed the Switch to be the Switch. The most notable being USB-C. They could run power, video, audio, and data all through a single port. But each of those still needed their own technologies behind the port.

Increased Power Requirement

The dock requires 39W (specifically 15V/2.6A) to output video.

The dock does use a bit more power than the Switch alone, for the USB ports and video conversion. But it rarely draws more power than it does when undocked. The extra 21W required for the dock to operated is not needed or used beyond a verification check.

See How Switch Charging Works for more details on how the Switch draws power.

Product Verification Before Video Output

When connecting a dock-like device to the Switch’s USB-C port it calls on Nintendo Alternate Mode. That is looking for the vendor identity and product identity (VID/PID) of the connected device.

If the VID/PID doesn’t match what the Switch is looking forward then it never moves on to DP Alt Mode, which is what allows for a video signal to pass through.

The Nintendo Alt Mode prevents most third-party USB-C to HDMI adapters from working with the Switch, even if they support DP Alt Mode.

The product verification process was cracked. Third-party docks marketed for the Switch are using this crack.

DP Alt Mode to HDMI

The Switch uses DP Alt Mode for video output. It is essentially USB-C DisplayPort.

The dock uses HDMI output as it is more common on TVs than DisplayPort. The dock handles the DP Alt Mode to HDMI conversion.

Not all USB-C to HDMI adapters support DP Alt Mode. And if they do they must still get around the Nintendo Alt Mode check to enable video output.

USB-C Power Delivery Protocol Issues

USB-C devices negotiate power regulation with their charger. The dock handles negotiations with the charger, then passed on to the Switch console.

The dock uses a specific negotiating chip. Third-party dock producers use a variety of negotiating chips. Or in some cases none at all.

Some third-party docks appear to not follow proper USB-C PD protocol.

The Switch does not follow strict USB-C standards. It has USB-C protocol errors and flaws. These are hardware-level issues.

Data

USB 2.0/3.0 is used to carry data from accessories attached to the dock to the Switch console.

The two side ports accept USB 2.0. Which is more than enough for wired controllers.

The rear port is built for USB 3.0. Best used for high-speed accessories, such as a USB to Ethernet adapter. But Nintendo has yet to enable USB 3.0 on the console’s end. Given the Nintendo Switch OLED’s dock comes with built-in Ethernet (the primary use for USB 3.0 on the dock) it likely never will.

Box

The new Nintendo Switch comes in a new box, red on all sides. Easy to identify in stores. Inside the box, everything is the same. The box isn’t sealed (useful for charging and updating the Switch before you gift it). And all the accessories are packaged in the same way. And in the same spots.

You can also identify a new model Switch by its serial number. The new models start with XKW. But the red box will be the biggest giveaway.

Hardware

Nintendo updated the new Nintendo Switch with several new hardware components.

The SoC (system-on-chip, CPU, and GPU combo) is definitely an NVIDIA Tegra. Produced with a smaller die, likely going from 20mm to 16mm. This reduces cost and increases efficiency. It is thought to be the new Tegra X1 Mariko (the original Switch uses the Tegra X1 Logan). But we’re still waiting on final confirmation,. The updated Mariko would provide much of the power efficiencies seen in the new Switch. Eurogamer has a great piece detailing the Tegra X1 upgrade.

The storage and memory have also both changed. The amounts are the same (32GB storage, 4GB RAM). But the new hardware is also more power-efficient. Adding more potential playtime on top of the SoC upgrade.

PMIC = power management integrated circuit. It controls the flow and direction of electrical power. Common tech on battery using devices. The change in chips could explain the different power draw results I found.

The motherboard was also upgraded. To accommodate the new hardware. If may or may not also add to the power efficiency total. Other chips have different model numbers, but nothing significant.

It is expected that many of these same components will be found on the Nintendo Switch Lite. It would explain its own increased power efficiency compared to the original Switch. And it would be more cost-effective for Nintendo to standardize across the product line.

Display

The new Nintendo Switch has a different display than the original model. The new display is slightly brighter. And warmer (redder, less blue). The change in colors seems to be to make it more color accurate. Though some gamers may prefer the blues of the original model. Several early reviewers noticed it with side-by-side comparisons. Kevin Kenson confirmed it with the help of a color expert.

There is no hard evidence that the new Switch is using a Sharp IGZO display. The Wall Street Journal reported Sharp was supplying Nintendo with new, IGZO displays. For an unknown version of the Switch. Spawn Wave’s tear down identified the screen as being a different model from the same provider, Innolux. He also declared it wasn’t the new IGZO. But there’s something else worth considering.

Sharp and Innolux’s IGZO and OLED display business were integrated in 2016. Foxconn owns the majority shares of both companies. And brought the two groups together. So a “Sharp IGZO” display could carry the Innolux branding.

It is also worth considering what IGZO displays offer. The display can be quickly switched on and off. While showing a still image. Done right it reduces power consumption by 80-90%. The same function means slightly faster response times. IGZO displays also provide better color accuracy, increased brightness, and more pixel density.

Less power consumption… brighter… more color-accurate… sounding familiar?

I’m not saying the new model Switch has an IGZO display. I don’t know, and I haven’t found any confirmation with a good source. We know the display’s model (Innolux P062CCA-AZ2). But a basic search doesn’t turn up any technical details. The changes to the new Switch’s display may be from the same technology it was using before, just a newer version. But if it is IGZO it would fit in with the changes that have been observed.

Audio

There’s been no change to the audio hardware used in the new Nintendo Switch. Likewise, there’s no change to how you can and can’t connect headphones to the Switch.

Any headphones with a 3.5mm headphone jack or USB-C can connect to the Switch. But you cannot pair Bluetooth headphones to the Switch. For that, you still have to use a Bluetooth transmitter. You can get one that connects via the headphone jack. It can be connected while docked or charging the Switch. But will dangle unless you secure it (I used velcro strips).

Or get a Bluetooth transmitter that connects via USB-C. They connect to the USB-C port on the bottom. And are easier to deal with in handheld mode. But you can’t dock with them. Nor can you charge the Switch and listen at the same time.

Size and Weight

The two consoles are the same size.

My new console weighed 0.5 ounces (14 grams) less than my old console. I weighed them with and without Joy-Cons attached and got the same result.

So if upgrading the new console may feel a bit lighter in your hands. Because it is, but not by much.

Battery and Play Time

The new Nintendo Switch uses the same size and type of battery as the original model. But Nintendo states the new model can play for 4 to 9 hours. And plays Zelda: Breath of the Wild up to 5.5 hours with reduced settings. I and others have found that to be accurate.

My own testing of the new Switch shows the improved battery life. Thanks to increased power efficiency from the new hardware found inside. The new model is 29-33% more efficient. Resulting in a 39-80% increase in playtime. It will also extend how much playtime a power bank will give you, as it consumes less power from any source.

Charging

The charge time of the new console appears to have improved, a bit.

Comparing New and Old Nintendo Switch Charge Times

The increased power efficiency is likely the cause. Less power is used while asleep and gaming means more power can be sent to the battery.

While the new charging times are lackluster the improved power draw is a much bigger deal. And something Nintendo never mentioned. With the old Switch, some USB-C PD chargers would charge the Switch slower than others. That is no longer the case with the Switch. With any USB-C PD charger, there is now no more than a 1.5W gap in performance. Where before it was up to a 6W gap.

USB-A chargers offering 5V/2A or better also charge the new Switch faster than the old. Coupled with the increased power efficiency and an old USB-A power bank can charge while you play. Under most conditions, anyway.

Gaming Performance

No gaming performance gains have been found with the new Nintendo Switch. And plenty of people have been testing for it. GameXplain shows that game load times between the two model Switches are the same. Both for starting up and in-game loads. But he did find that the new Switch downloads digital games faster. So you’ll get a small improvement exactly once with any new digital game.

Joy-Cons

The new Nintendo Switch comes with a newer revision of Joy-Cons. But it isn’t anything already on store shelves if you just want a new pair of Joy-Cons.

The only discovered difference is the placement of the Bluetooth antenna. It moved from the top to the bottom. Like to deal with connectivity issues some earlier Joy-Cons had.

The analog sticks themselves are the same. Spawn Wave did a complete tear down trying to find a difference and couldn’t. There are some model number differences. But the hardware looks to be the same. Whether these new Joy-Cons will be susceptible to the drifting issue, only time and lots of use will tell. It does make sense that there wasn’t a big change to the Joy-Cons. Nintendo didn’t start their free repair policy until after the new Switch was designed.

You can check Joy-Con versions by looking at the Japan model number. The newer version ends in C3.

Aside from the updated Joy-Cons, the included accessories are the same. The dock and AC adapter have the same model numbers. And the same specs. They are also compatible with an older model Switch. And vice versa.

The HDMI cable appears to be more black. Where the original Switch had a dark gray cable.

The same Joy-Con grip (non-charging version) and Joy-Con safety straps are also included.

Hacking the New Nintendo Switch Compared to the Old Nintendo Switch

Some Nintendo Switch owners enjoy hacking their Switch to enable custom software options. It to the point where you could load Android on an original model Switch. A big question about the new model Switch is can it be hacked? Or should those who enjoy homebrew stick with the model they already have.

The hacking community takes time to figure out exploits to do what they do. So only time will tell with the new model Switch. But according to the community it isn’t looking to be easy. Over the last two years, Nintendo has been implementing new security features. To close the exploits used. Firmware updates close some of the exploits. Often the Switch gets hacked via a new method afterward. Hardware updates close some other exploits. These came up as minor revisions in the original model Switches. A launch day Switch was easier to exploit than the newest unit in stores.

With the new Nintendo Switch, every unit has the latest security updates. So every unit has known exploits closed. But no technology is 100% secure. If there is a remaining or brand new exploit it’ll likely be found. And the cat and mouse game between Nintendo and the homebrew community begins anew.

Trade-In Value

GameStop is offering $200 store credit for an original Nintendo Switch. And through September 15, 2019, they are giving an extra $25 trade credit for Switch consoles. With that deal, you can get a new Nintendo Switch for $75 plus tax.

The cash value of an original Switch is $120-160 with various trade-in offers. And is selling for ~$230 on eBay (~$200 after fees). If your goal is to get a new Switch the GameStop trade-in offer is your best bet.

Is the New Nintendo Switch Worth Upgrading?

TV vs Handheld Mode

If you mostly play with the Switch docked, then no. All the benefits center around better battery life. Which doesn’t matter when your Switch lives in its dock. It can run cooler with less fan noise. But there are no performance improvements.

If you mostly play handheld, then maybe. It comes down to how much-increased play time is worth to you. Because at the end of the day you’ll still be playing the same games.

For Travelers

With the original model, many owners carry a power bank when traveling. Unless you only play less power-hungry games the Switch’s battery wouldn’t carry you from coast to coast. Not to mention time at the airport and potential delays.

With the new model, you can play Zelda through a coast to coast flight. And still have ~90 minutes for delays or if you can’t get to a power output outside your gate. But you do need to reduce screen brightness to ~50% and turn on airplane mode.

You can buy a power bank for less than trading in your Switch. The original Switch and a 10,000mAh power bank will get you at least 7 hours of playtime. But consider that the same power bank gives the new Switch even more added playtime. At least 10 hours, to be exact. And that’s with max screen brightness.

Being able to do without a power bank lightens your bag. And gives you one less thing to keep up with and charge. And if you do need to extend your playtime it takes less power bank to get more time.

For Myself

Would I have personally bought it if I wasn’t doing testing? No. I mostly play at home or in the homes of friends and family. So there’s usually a wall outlet available. When I travel the original battery life plus a compact power bank is more than enough for me. Should I go on a longer flight then it would be more cost-effective to use a larger power bank than get a new console.

But my needs are not universal. Consider your own priorities. And if you have a GameStop nearby is the better battery life worth $75 to you?

Is the New Nintendo Switch Worth Buying if You’re Considering a Switch?

Now is a great time to buy a Nintendo Switch if you’ve been considering it. We just had a model refresh, so it is like buying the original Switch on launch day. Nintendo has promised no new hardware announcements for the rest of 2019. The new Pokémon game comes out this year. And all your other Nintendo favorites have titles on the Switch.

If you expect to only play in handheld mode then you may want to wait for the Nintendo Switch Lite to be released. And then see how it compares. We know it’ll be power efficient. Likely using a lot of the same components found in the new Switch. But it has a smaller battery to save weight and cost, so less total playtime. But it will also be $100 cheaper.

There is speculation of a “Switch Pro” coming in the future. But there are no details or facts to back that up. Obviously, Nintendo will do something new with the Switch at some point in the future. They released this revised version two years after the original release. But waiting for a theoretical version of the Switch for an unknown amount of time doesn’t help you play Smash Bros in the here and now.

Where Can I Find the New Nintendo Switch?

The new Nintendo Switch is available on Amazon.

Best Buy is also offering it with free shipping or store pick up.

Many GameStop stores have it in inventory. But it isn’t available on their website yet.

Target, Walmart, and other retailers are putting out the new model as the older model sells. Look for the telltale red box in their display cases. Or ask the employees if they have any in the back they can pull for you.

ZMI has launched their first Kickstarter for the ZMI PowerPack Ambi. The smallest, dual USB-C port power bank to hit the market. And unlike most Kickstarter projects product shipment is next month!

The ZMI PowerPack Ambi

The ZMI PowerPack Ambi (model number QB812) is the new power bank. At first glance it is like other 18W/10,000mAh power banks. But where others include an older USB-A port this model is pure USB-C. Making it ideal for those with several USB-C devices. And some neat pass through charging tricks. Early bird supports can get the power bank and a 50 cm USB-C cable for $25 + shipping.

Tech Specs

Capacity: 10,000mAh | 37Wh

Ports: USB-C x2

Output (Single Port): 18W USB-C PD (5V/3A, 9V/2A)

Output (Dual Port): 20W (5V/4A split)

Input: 18W USB-C PD (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A, 15V/1.2A)

5.81 x 2.81 x 0.58 inches | 148 x 71 x 15 mm

9.84 oz | 279 grams

Size and Weight

The ZMI PowerPack Ambi isn’t going to win smallest power bank in general. The Kickstarter specs list it as being 5.81 x 2.81 x 0.58 inches (148 x 71 x 15 mm). That’s larger than ZMI’s other 10,000mAh USB-C power bank. As well as the AUKEY PB-Y13 10000 USB-C PD. And about the same size as the Anker PowerCore Slim 10000 PD. But all those only offer one USB-C port, plus legacy ports. Whereas this new portable charger offers two USB-C ports.

At 9.84 oz it is also heavier than most of its peers. But the enclosure is metal, where most other models use plastic. That should help with any heat issues. Metal power banks run cool to the touch in my experience.

ZMI PowerPack Ambi in action

Performance

Performance wise the ZMI PowerPack Ambi runs as well as any other 10,000mAH USB-C power bank with a single connection. It can output up to 18W USB-C PD (5V/3A, 9V/2A). That’ll fast charge an iPhone 8/X/XR/XS or Google Pixel. It’ll charge a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode near its max rate. And will keep up with an iPad Pro.

With both USB-C ports in use total output goes up, but per port output goes down. Both ports only offer 5V. And it can output up to 20W total across both ports. That’s still enough to charge a pair of phones. Or charge your phone and Nintendo Switch while you play.

Its input specs are quite flexible. Either USB-C port can support input. Input is also up to 18W USB-C PD. But it has a larger range of power profiles (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A, 15V/1.2A). Unlike most of its peers the Nintendo Switch’s AC adapter would likely recharge this power bank. Total recharge time is 4 hours.

Capacity

The ZMI PowerPack Ambi’s capacity is standard for its size, offering 10,000mAh (37Wh). They also list its “nominal capacity,” which is what I call actual capacity. It is how much power you can expect to get depending on the charge type used.

USB-C, 5V/3A: 5,500mAh

USB-C, 9V/2A: 2,600mAh

Dual USB-C, 5V/4A: 5,000mAh

It can recharge most phones up to 2 times. A bit more if you top off rather than fully recharge. A bit less if you only plug in while the phone is below 50%.

I also expect it’ll keep a Nintendo Switch gaming for 4.5+ hours, depending on the same and settings.

In general 10,000mAh is the most common capacity in smaller USB-C power banks. It is ideal for keeping two phones or one Switch up and running away from home.

Pass Through Charging and UPS

ZMI notes the QB812 supports pass through charging, to charge both the power bank and a device. Pass through charging allows a power bank to both charge itself and a connected device. The power received from the wall charger splits. Some to the power bank’s own batteries. And some to the connected device. How it handles the split varies. And there are more inefficiencies than normal.

It can also be an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for small USB-C devices in your home. This functions differently than normal pass through charging. With pass through charging you can get a reset of output when input is lost. A charging phone wouldn’t care. But a running Raspberry Pi 4 would and could result in a shutdown/restart. With UPS there is no blip, and so no device loses power until the power bank itself is drained. ZMI shows it connected with a security camera. And mention using it with a Wi-Fi router.

ZMI PowerPack Ambi acting as a UPS

If you have a solar charger with USB-C output it can smooth out the charge to your device. The solar charger recharges the power bank, at a variable. The power bank charges your phone at a regular rate. The phone charges normally, the power bank gets some (but not all) its power back. Unplug the phone and keep charging the power bank when done.

I would expect the dual port specs to come into play. Meaning no fast charging while using pass through charging. And the power bank’s own input would be less.
